She sings: can't keep quiet,
yet in my discontent
I can make no sound,
can neither find the words
nor fathom the thoughts
to decipher the
disquiet lurking far,
far below.

Distant hints of memories
haunt my horizons,
whispering promise and
prophecy, inspiring
tales wherein hope and
history rhyme.

But my steps remain
yet out of sync with
the Sanctified Rhythms.
I cannot translate the
echoes resonating
softly but persistently
from deep within hidden
chambers: mysterious
enchantments interwoven
with melancholy.

An enigma I
cannot begin to
answer until I
embrace and grapple, breathe
and bleed, live and die
and resurrect with
this singular question.
This began with listening to the song "I Can't Keep Quiet" by Milck, which went viral after being sung at the Women's March on Washington back in January.  But while that song was about discontent that motivated someone to speak and act, I found I was dealing with discontent within myself of a very different kind, and that's where this poem came from.

Those distant horizons will unshackle you and tackle you, with the memories so far in back of you and the truth in front of you, completely uprooting you and looting you from every doubt and conviction, lie and superstition, love is the ammunition for every act of contrition, your submission is approved...
